Pain in HMS

Everyone with HMS will know that pain is a dominant feature of the Syndrome. Pain may be acute i.e. from an injury or dislocation or be chronic i.e. longstanding. When pain becomes chronic its effects can be extremely debilitating and may often lead to a downward spiral of depression, fatigue, increased pain, depression etc. Managing chronic pain can be a challenge for both patient and health professional.

The links within this section explain the mechanisms of pain in HMS and discuss the interaction of HMS and fibromyalgia (FMS). They also provide advice on the range of pain medication available for those with HMS, tips for managing chronic pain and a personal view of pain clinics.

There are a number of articles on pain on sites included in our links database. One article of particular interest is to be found on the US Ehlers-Danlos site. This article describes the findings of a group of researchers on the incidence of pain in individuals with EDS.
