I thought I would share a hobby that me and my teens have all found super enjoyable but also very hypermobility friendly.

Although “colouring in” is not a new activity that people do for relaxation, it has (apparently) been trending on TikTok. A new style of colouring books have become very popular – ‘bold and easy.’ Think very simple drawings like younger children’s colouring books, but with illustrations that are more aimed at teenagers and adults. Combined with using alcohol markers – which are now available at much more affordable prices than their professional counterparts (e.g. Copics).

The reason this has made colouring in more accessible for us is because the pens themselves are very thick (generally) so nice and easy to hold, and also because the ink glides on like warm butter – so you don’t end up pressuring really hard – which all of us in my house are guilty of.

You can also add in as much or as little detail as you like, for example, blending colours together, adding shading with darker pens, or using gen pens to add in more intricate detail. It’s also something that my teens are happy to sit with me and do – which parents of older kids will know is quite rare! But I also think because the books are pretty simple, they are absolutely suitable for younger children too.

Have your young people tried any new hobbies recently?
